While summer can be brutal, summer conventions might straddle the thin line of nightmarish experience coupled with I’ve Made A Huge Mistake. With San Diego Comic-Con right around the corner, we wanted to put together a few survival tips so the intrepid stand a chance at not being overwhelmed.

PMYT-COMICCON-D2-011

  1. Maps: Memorize the layout of San Diego’s Convention Center. Not going to Hall H or Ballroom 20? Steer clear of the area to avoid incredibly long lines and general pandemonium. This is important: Learn your booth number. Stumbling through the chaos that is the show floor while trying to get to your booth can be maddening. Dodging cosplayers, hyper children, hyper adults, and the shell-shocked newbies is not for the faint of heart, so know your surroundings.
  2. Schedules: We can’t stress this enough, but know your schedule. Whether you’re on a specific timetable for your booth or taking a few hours to enjoy the con, remember your schedule and Comic-Con’s schedule as well. If you want to see a specific panel or event, keep in mind that lines generally begin to queue hours in advance.
  3. Water: Stay hydrated. In a mad crush of humans all jostling to occupy the same space, it doesn’t matter if there’s air conditioning. It will be hot. It will be crowded. And you will be thirsty. BYOW.
  4. Shoes: We love those Chuck Taylors as much as you do, but nothing beats good arch support. Pack your freshest pair of kick and get to walking!
  5. Enjoy Yourself: Ultimately, you’re either at Comic-Con for work, play, or a little bit of both. Take the time to enjoy yourself and marvel at the amazing cosplay, energy, and/or sheer magnitude of the convention.

From this gorgeous styled wedding shoot at Carondelet House to these fun wedding inspiration boards they created exclusively for FormDecor, we love their creative and glamorous approach to wedding and event decor! One look at their portfolio and you’ll know why the weddings and events they throw are consistently featured in places like Grace Ormonde Style, 100 Layer Cake and Wedding Chicks. Most recently, Sterling Social was featured in Style Me Pretty for this eclectic barnyard wedding at Ojai Valley Inn. FormDecor furnishings were used in a lounge and cocktail area to help give this rustic space an urban, modern look. See for yourselves the beautiful setting below! For our inaugural weekly #WeddingWednesday Love, we are spotlighting the always vivacious, bubbly and talented Carmen Fuentes of Expressionary Events! As you may have already seen, Carmen sat down with our president, Fritz Williams, to discuss upcoming trends for wedding aesthetics and furniture rentals in this video interview. It was such an honor to be included in the list of highly-reputable vendors she has worked with.

#WeddingWednesday Love is a weekly tribute to outstanding event planners and designers specifically within the wedding industry. Carmen was no doubt one of the first to come to mind as she has creatively used FormDecor furniture to wow her clients and audience – we were floored by this styled wedding shoot! One look at her portfolio and you’ll instantly see “expression in every detail.”  Carmen’s weddings are one of a kind and tailor made to fit the needs and specifications of her clients and we approach our furniture rentals in a similar manner, as no event or wedding design should resemble another.

Here is another great example of Carmen’s love for the wedding planning industry, as she interviews Niloufar Gibson of the Bridal Hotlist!

Designer Spotlight: Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971)

Arne Jacobsen, born in Copenhagen in 1902, endures as a true visionary of modern architecture and design and a prominent leader of Danish Modern design. Schooled as a mason at the Technical School in Copenhagen, Jacobsen later expanded his construction knowledge, becoming an architect at the Royal Danish Academy of Arts. Fleeing Denmark in 1943 to escape the German occupation, Jacobsen worked in Sweden before returning to his homeland in 1949.

Perhaps it was his “hands-on” experience as a mason that caused Arne Jacobsen to develop the attention to detail at every level of new construction for which he is known. As an example, his winning design for the House of the Future contest in 1929 exhibited extraordinary detail as he and collaborator Flemming Lassen designed not only the outside structure, but also all of the interiors, including furniture, textiles and color palettes.

Jacobsen rose to international fame after the debut of his famous “Ant” chair, an evolution of a chair he created for the Munkegard School near Copenhagen. The “Ant” chair, a 3-legged stackable chair with a seat and back of contiguous molded plywood, subsequently evolved into the successful four-legged “Series 7” chair introduced in 1955.

For other architectural projects, Arne Jacobsen was known to have created not only furniture but also minute design details such as flatware, lights, sinks, taps, door handles, and even locks and keys, earning him the reputation of a meticulous perfectionist. One such project, the Radission SAS Hotel in Copenhagen, yielded several well-known classic designs, including the ever-popular “Swan” chair, a single upholstered sculptural design beautifully representing his own take on organic modernism. As well, yet another example of Jacobsen’s forward-thinking, the flatware he designed for the SAS was selected for use in the movie classic “2001: A Space Odyssey” because of its futuristic design.

Duets set by James Pearse Connelly

Set decorator James Pearse Connelly is one busy guy. From working behind the scenes on hit TV shows such as the Voice and The Ellen Show to setting up big events including the Art Director’s Guild Awards, we’re constantly inspired by the work James puts together! Get to know the Emmy Award winning set decorator below as we recap some of our favorite design moments by James featuring FormDecor furnishings!

FormDecor: When designing and deciding the art direction on the sets of hit reality competition shows, like The Voice and The Winner Is, what makes your approach unique?

James Pearse Connelly: Not so sure about Unique, I suppose all designers do the same thing. Cry. Actually, I’m a newbie and still figuring out my process. As every project is different, so is every process. Sometimes clients want something specific and sometimes clients want to explore different aesthetics and go on a visual reference journey. With every project I try to push the envelope and get a reaction out of the client. Does something specifically make them mad, annoyed, excited. From those reactions I can usually re-translate a fresh idea to the project and take it to another level.

IMG_1527-450x300

NBC’s The Winner Is featuring FormDecor’s JPC Sectional.

FD: What influences do you draw from, and what makes you tick?

JPC: Mostly I’m inspired by feelings and stories. And I use architecture and local new and contemporary art to translate how I feel in response.

Voice-3-fix3-450x265

Blake Shelton’s lounge on The Voice Season 3 featuring FormDecor’s Iman Modular Chairs in Orange, Zebra Block Table and Constructo Coffee Table.

FD: How much of a role does FormDecor Furniture Rental have in your design process?

JPC: The folks at FormDecor are family! Always affordable, always easy to approach and always gorgeous stuff – FormDecor and their team are my GO TO JEANS. I wouldn’t know what else to wear if I didn’t start there.

Untitled-1-450x300

James used FormDecor’s Victoria II Chair, Argus Table and more to create an elegantly spooky scene for the 2011 Spike TV Scream Awards Green Room.

FD: For the aspiring set designer or art director — any words of wisdom to pass on?

JPC: Learn about everything ELSE first. art, architecture, upholstery, drawing, carpentry, painting, typing, font work, history, how to dress yourself, sewing, music, anatomy, Spanish, geometry, physics, and how to eat properly at the dining room table – and don’t stop learning after. I think the more you bring to the table, the more versed the creativity can be.

ellen_1-450x248

The Band Perry sing and dance under the Royalton Chandelier during their performance on The Ellen Show.

FD: What is one thing you can’t live without? Or What is one thing people don’t know about you?

JPC: I’m currently obsessed with Instagram and the new Katy Perry song. I couldn’t live without my iPhone and my French Bulldog, Eleanor. Can you tell I’m gay?
