Duets set by James Pearse Connelly
Set decorator James Pearse Connelly is one busy guy. From working behind the scenes on hit TV shows such as the Voice and The Ellen Show to setting up big events including the Art Director’s Guild Awards, we’re constantly inspired by the work James puts together! Get to know the Emmy Award winning set decorator below as we recap some of our favorite design moments by James featuring FormDecor furnishings!
FormDecor: When designing and deciding the art direction on the sets of hit reality competition shows, like The Voice and The Winner Is, what makes your approach unique?
James Pearse Connelly: Not so sure about Unique, I suppose all designers do the same thing. Cry. Actually, I’m a newbie and still figuring out my process. As every project is different, so is every process. Sometimes clients want something specific and sometimes clients want to explore different aesthetics and go on a visual reference journey. With every project I try to push the envelope and get a reaction out of the client. Does something specifically make them mad, annoyed, excited. From those reactions I can usually re-translate a fresh idea to the project and take it to another level.
FD: What influences do you draw from, and what makes you tick?
JPC: Mostly I’m inspired by feelings and stories. And I use architecture and local new and contemporary art to translate how I feel in response.
FD: How much of a role does FormDecor Furniture Rental have in your design process?
JPC: The folks at FormDecor are family! Always affordable, always easy to approach and always gorgeous stuff – FormDecor and their team are my GO TO JEANS. I wouldn’t know what else to wear if I didn’t start there.
FD: For the aspiring set designer or art director — any words of wisdom to pass on?
JPC: Learn about everything ELSE first. art, architecture, upholstery, drawing, carpentry, painting, typing, font work, history, how to dress yourself, sewing, music, anatomy, Spanish, geometry, physics, and how to eat properly at the dining room table – and don’t stop learning after. I think the more you bring to the table, the more versed the creativity can be.
FD: What is one thing you can’t live without? Or What is one thing people don’t know about you?
JPC: I’m currently obsessed with Instagram and the new Katy Perry song. I couldn’t live without my iPhone and my French Bulldog, Eleanor. Can you tell I’m gay?
