Michael Thonet (1796-1871) was an incredibly important resource when it came to any advances in modern furniture design. A German-born master craftsman, he’s the godfather of bent-wood furniture design and craft. Responsible for patenting this new method of shaping wood under heat and pressure, Thonet made it possible for the development of the shapes we’ve come to associate with 20th century modern furniture design. The Thonet Bentwood Chair is a beautiful example of this method and displays the utmost in craftsmanship.
